What is a Panther? Hint: It Isn’t a Species Name
When I glanced at the TV the other day to see a Carolina Panthers game, it reminded me of something I’d heard before. I remembered reading that the term “panther” isn’t actually the name of one species. Yet, panthers are typically depicted like they are in the adorable football logo: a large black feline.
I couldn’t remember exactly what I’d heard about panthers, so I decided it was the perfect time to dive into deeper research about these large cats. So, what is a panther? Is it one species or an umbrella term?

What is a Panther Animal?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary has three definitions of panthers: leopard, cougar, and jaguar. But how is that possible? How can a panther also be three other big cat species at once?
It’s because panther is a general term rather than one for a specific species. It’s typically used to describe a large cat with a solid-colored coat.
Panthers are most commonly associated with black panthers, but those are just leopards or jaguars with black coloring. If you look closely at images of these beautiful felines, you’ll faintly see their spots.
Panther is also a term used for large brown felines, such as the Florida panther. This type of panther can also be called puma, cougar, and mountain lion all while describing the same species.
Comparing Panthers to Known Large Cats
Since panther is just a generic term for some large cats, how can the word be used? Which cats fall under the panther umbrella? Below are a few common cat terms associated with panthers and whether they can be used interchangeably or not.
Panther vs Black Jaguar
Black panthers and jaguars aren’t separate species. When jaguars develop a black coat due to high eumelanin production, they appear completely black from a distance. When the sun hits their coat in a certain way, you may be able to spot the unique patterns of a jaguar.
The same thing can happen with leopards. They may develop solid black fur, causing people to refer to them as black panthers.
Black jaguars and black leopards are not a separate subspecies, they just have a unique genetic makeup. These beautiful black cats still fall under the same scientific name as jaguars (Panthera onca) and leopards (Panthera pardus).

Panther vs Cougar
No cougars have been spotted with black fur like leopards and jaguars. However, the term cougar and panther can still be used interchangeably.
Even though cougars don’t display the classic black fur that panthers are known for, they’re still a large feline with a solid-colored coat. Therefore, they fall under the umbrella term of panther.
Panther vs Puma
A puma (Puma concolor) is actually the same species as a cougar. They have the same scientific name, so people just have multiple names for the same big cat.
As a result, pumas can also be called panthers. What’s interesting about pumas (cougars), is they aren’t born with a solid brown coat. They have dark-colored spots when they’re young, which slowly fade to give them a single-colored coat as adults.
Panther vs Mountain Lion
A mountain lion is yet another term for Puma concolor. With so many distinct names, it’s easy to mistake mountain lions, pumas, cougars, and panthers as separate animals, but they’re all just nicknames for one species.
The common name for the species varies based on location. Mountain lion seems to be the most widely used, while cougar is more common in northern North America and puma is more common in southern North America.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where Do Panthers Live?
Black panthers can live from Mexico to northern Argentina (jaguars) or across Africa and Asia (leopards). If you’re referring to a cougar, puma, or mountain lion, their range stretches across both North and South America.
Are There Black Panthers in the United States?
No, there aren’t any wild black panthers in the United States. Since black panthers are leopards or jaguars with black fur, they’re native to other countries outside of the U.S.
Are Panthers Dangerous?
Panthers don’t usually harm humans, but it’s always best to keep a distance from wildlife, especially large predators. They’re curious animals that may wander close to humans, but they very rarely attack humans.
If you encounter one, it’s best to stay calm, stand still, and appear bigger than you are. Running could trigger a panther’s prey drive.
Are Panthers Endangered?
It depends on the type of panther. Mountain lions, leopards, and jaguars as a whole aren’t considered endangered but are vulnerable or near threatened. However, certain subspecies are endangered, such as Florida panthers and Amur leopards.
Sadly, the Amur leopard is currently one of the rarest animals in the world due to the subspecies’ rapid decline.

Despite Popular Belief, Panther isn’t Just One Species
I’m sure many animal enthusiasts have wondered what the difference between big cats like panthers, cougars, and mountain lions are. Now, you no longer have to wonder.
Panthers aren’t just one species. The term could be used to describe certain leopards, jaguars, pumas, cougars, and mountain lions. It’s a fun little fact that I’ll definitely be sharing with more people.
Regardless of whether you’re talking about a black panther or a mountain lion, all these big cats truly are magnificent creatures.
